What am I starting on - English
When I arrived at the airport in Bali, I was immediately picked up by a transfer. I arrived at my accommodation, and after setting up an Indonesian phone number, I could finally start settling in. I would be living in a student house with a total of 21 students. It is a pretty big house, but incredibly cozy. I was shown my room, and it was bigger than my student room in Groningen. I even had my own toilet, sink, and shower. No need to share anything.
Tip: Hold off on letting your family and friends know that you’ve landed. You can have a foreign SIM card installed within half an hour to 45 minutes. It would have saved me a €73 bill...😬 (This only applies if you're interning outside Europe; sometimes this is arranged for you.)
Tip: Check the water’s mineral content and whether it’s safe to drink. Water in places like Bali can damage your hair and cause thinning if you wash it with regular tap water. Order a shower filter before your trip on websites like bol.com to protect your hair. Additionally, bring as much hair care as possible from the Netherlands, as the ingredients often protect your hair better. If you have sensitive skin, you might also want to bring skincare products from home. A tip for the men: aftershave can be difficult to find in some countries outside Europe, and for women, tampons can be hard to find as well. Also, bring a mosquito net if you're going to a place with lots of mosquitoes. Do some research on which of these things apply to the country you’re going to.
Tip: It’s recommended to arrive at your destination at least five days before your internship starts. You’ll have time to settle in, buy any last-minute items that didn’t fit in your suitcase, figure out transportation to and from your internship, adjust to the climate, and, of course, recover from any potential jet lag.
P.S. You’ll also have time to discover some nice restaurants and explore your new surroundings. For me, the best part was getting to know my roommates, because they’re on the same new adventure as you. You’re never alone! 💕
